Application Scenarios for Clean Stainless-Steel Tubing

Application Scenarios for Clean Stainless-Steel Tubing

(Including V+V / VIM+VAR Ultra-High-Purity 316LVV)

Key Characteristics

Clean stainless-steel tubing features BA (bright annealed) or EP (electropolished) inner surfaces, low particle generation, low extractables, helium leak-test capability, and corrosion resistance.

V+V refers to the VIM+VAR double-vacuum melting process used to purify the material. It is intended for the most demanding ultra-high-purity (UHP) applications, primarily in semiconductor manufacturing and high-end precision gas-delivery systems.

1. Semiconductor and Display Panels

(The primary application for V+V tubing)

  • UHP specialty-gas piping in wafer fabs, handling high-purity process gases such as silane, ammonia, hydrogen chloride, nitrogen trifluoride, and other 5N–8N gases.

  • Gas-delivery systems for CVD, ALD, etching, diffusion furnaces, and related processes. These systems follow SEMI F20 requirements and tightly control particles and metal-ion extractables to protect yield.

  • Ultra-pure water (UPW) transfer lines for wafer-cleaning loops, typically at 18.2 MΩ·cm.

  • High-purity chemical and carrier-gas distribution systems in LCD/OLED production lines.

  • Internal gas lines, vacuum lines, and valve-manifold base piping within semiconductor equipment.

2. Biopharmaceuticals and Biotechnology

(GMP / FDA environments)

  • Water for Injection (WFI) and purified-water circulation systems.

  • Product-transfer piping and bioreactor connections for vaccines, monoclonal antibodies, antibiotics, and APIs.

  • Systems requiring CIP cleaning and SIP sterilization with steam at 121°C. Smooth, crevice-free internal surfaces help minimize biofilm adhesion.

  • High-purity reagent piping in laboratories and R&D platforms.

3. Food and Beverage

(Sanitary clean tubing; V+V is rarely required)

  • Product-transfer lines for dairy, beer, juice, condiments, and carbonated-beverage production.

  • Piping for food additives, flavorings, and CIP cleaning systems, meeting food-hygiene requirements.

  • Typically uses sanitary-grade 304 or 316L tubing.

4. Laboratories, Analytical Instruments, and Research Clean-Gas Systems

  • Carrier-gas piping for precision analytical instruments such as gas chromatographs and mass spectrometers, including nitrogen, argon, and hydrogen.

  • Distribution systems for high-purity air and inert gases in clean research, chemical, and physical laboratories.

  • Clean compressed-air and dry-air piping with extremely low dew points and no oil or particles also falls into this category. BA-grade clean stainless steel is commonly used; V+V EP tubing is selected for exceptionally stringent requirements.

5. Medical Systems

  • Central oxygen, medical vacuum, and medical compressed-air piping in hospitals, operating rooms, and ICUs.

  • Fluid lines for dialysis equipment and medical purified-water systems.

  • V+V ultra-high-purity material is generally reserved for implant-grade components. Standard 316L clean tubing is normally sufficient for typical hospital piping.

6. Solar, Lithium-Battery, and New-Energy Manufacturing

  • High-purity gas delivery for photovoltaic silicon-wafer growth and etching.

  • High-purity inert-gas protection and electrolyte-transfer piping in lithium-battery production lines.

7. Other High-End Industrial Applications

  • Fine chemicals: high-purity reagents and solvents where low metal-ion extractables are required.

  • Nuclear power and aerospace: V+V UHP tubing for corrosion-resistant, low-outgassing, non-magnetic critical fluid systems.

  • Advanced instruments and vacuum equipment: vacuum lines and gas-supply/sampling lines for sensors and high-end instruments.

Quick Selection Guide

Application Recommended Tubing Grade Material Notes
Semiconductor UHP specialty gases, top-tier vacuum systems, or precision sensor gas lines V+V (VIM+VAR) + EP electropolishing 316LVV with extremely low impurities; Ra ≤ 0.2 μm or lower; highest cost
Pharmaceuticals, standard clean laboratories, and dry clean compressed air EP electropolished or BA bright annealed Standard 316L; cost-effective
Food and beverage sanitary piping Sanitary AP/BA welded tubing 304/316L; lower requirements than the categories above

Key Points

  • V+V is not a surface treatment. It is a material-purification process achieved through vacuum melting.

  • Surface finish is achieved later through BA or EP processing. V+V material combined with EP finishing is required for semiconductor UHP piping systems.

  • For clean compressed air, BA tubing is adequate for most projects. Upgrade to V+V + EP tubing only where ultra-low dew point, ppb-level particle control, or gas supply for sensors and precision analytical equipment is required.
